How it works
The discount is subtracted from the original price. An extra discount is applied on the already-discounted price, not added to the first one. Sales tax is then added to the result.
Example
A $199.90 item with 30% off costs $139.93 — you save $59.97. An extra 10% off brings it to $125.94: the total discount is 37%, not 40%.
Frequently asked questions
Is 30% + 10% the same as 40% off?
No. The second discount applies to the reduced price, so the combined discount is 37%.
How do I find the original price from the sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). A $70 item at 30% off was originally $70 ÷ 0.7 = $100.
